There can be nothing nicer than planning a holiday. Possibilities abound. Thoughts of relaxation, great food and good times very often lead to images of azure waters and swaying palms trees. There’s something about a beach destination that is simply irresistible!

Kerala, often fondly referred to as “God’s Own Country” was voted by National Geographic Traveller as one of the 13 paradises in the world, and Kovalam Beach is Kerala’s #1 beach. From sunbathing to swimming, surfing to water skiing, parasailing to kayaking, if you love water, all can be found here! But there is much more to Kovalam than just its picture perfect cluster of three crescent shaped beaches.

First of all, Kovalam is culturally and historically rich with temples, palaces and forts, some of which date back as far as the 17th century. It is also the home of a great many festivals and traditions. The famous Kummattikali (colourful mask dance) is but one of the dances that can be experienced in Kovalam, particularly during the grand carnival of Onam.

If good food is what you’re looking for, then you’re in for a treat. Kovalam is renowned for its delicious cuisine which varies from the quintessential South Indian favourites (why not try the freshly cooked delicious Kerala appam and egg masala for breakfast?) to International and seafood. The freshest of fish caught daily by the local fishermen, such as sea salmon, blue marlin and barracuda, juiciest of prawns and lobsters, succulent crab and calamari, are all available here.

Shopping enthusiasts too can get their fix. There are numerous craft and carpet shops to explore locally, and the state capital Trivandrum is but a short drive away. And finally, when all that fun and relaxation becomes too much, you can of course pamper yourself with some well deserved Ayuverda. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine and Panchakarma, has become a world famous Spa treatment, and has certainly helped put Kerala on the global tourism map.
